Northwestern Spain’s Mencía, which goes by Jaen in Portugal’s Dão, is a great-grandchild of Pinot Noir and has earned a devoted international following in recent years. While riper renditions may veer into somewhat heavier territory, this cuvée from Manuel Mendez’s Pazo das Tapias estate in Monterrei showcases the variety’s more classical, Burgundian or Loire-esque appeal: vibrant forest fruit and brambly mystique through a veil of toasty vanilla.
