The preponderance of French expat varieties in Italy’s northeast, from Pinot Gris to the great grapes of Bordeaux, may be somewhat counterintuitive, but Merlot is indeed one of the stars in both Friuli and Veneto. This example from our friends at Bedin is youthfully fresh and an impressively versatile companion for food. Brightly dark fruit and earthy, herbaceous intrigue may remind one of Bordeaux, but it has a winning pesonality all its own.
